Indonesian shuttlers falling by the wayside

Mixed doubles pair Nova Widianto and Liliyana Natsir advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Badminton Championships in Hyderabad, India, on Thursday, but the bulk of the Indonesian shuttlers exited early.

World No. 2 Nova/Liliyana beat Malaysian pair Kien Ket Koo and Hui Lin Ng 21-15, 21-19 in 29 minutes, according to www.tournamentsoftware.com.

Taufik Hidayat and Simon Santoso continued their march while Sony Dwi Kuncoro was still playing Chetan Anand as of press time.

Taufik, the 2005 world champion, needed 36 minutes to shut out world No. 9 Yu Hsing Hsieh of Taiwan 21-15, 21-19, while Simon got past Kenichi Tago of Japan 21-10, 21-12.
However, most of the Indonesian players fell out.

Mixed doubles pair Devin Lahardi Fitriawan and Lita Nurlita were brushed aside 21-19, 21-19 by Denmark’s Thomas Laybourn and Kamilla Rytter Juhl.

Men’s doubles pair Yonathan Suryatama Dasuki and Rian Sukmawan went down 21-14, 21-17 to Malaysia’s Zakry Abdul Latif and Mohd Fairuzizuan Tazari.

Maria Kristin Yulianti also bowed out, losing 21-13, 21-14 to Pi Hongyan.

Women’s doubles pair Shendy Puspa Irawati and Meiliana Jauhari were ousted 21-16, 21-14 by China’s Ma Jin and Wang Xiaoli.
