Zinedine Zidane recently told Le Buteur magazine that he was thrilled to see the Algerian national team take first place in their World Cup qualifying group under the guidance of coach Rabah Saadane.
He also indicated that he had always followed the team from afar and that he and his family speak about the side regularly.
“I know they are first in their group in these combined qualifiers for the African Nations Cup and the World Cup and that gives me great pleasure,” he explained.
The former Real Madrid playmaker mentioned that he was particularly pleased by the fact that the side were playing as a team and achieving their results playing entertaining football.
He continued, “What’s good is to see the group advance like one single man. To see the team make progress and achieve things. That’s what’s important in a team, not individuals. It’s been a long team since we’ve seen Algerian play well at football and now to see them play like this and beat big team like Egypt, it makes you feel good.”
The Frenchman added that he would certainly go watch the Desert Foxes play should they hold on to claim a place in South Africa come next summer.
The North Africans currently lead Group C with seven points from three games. They are trailed by Zambia, who have four points, and Egypt and Rwanda, who have only gathered one each.
