City official named suspect in graft case

JAKARTA: The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has named a city official a suspect in a graft case in an advertisement project worth Rp 5.6 billion (US$540,000).

The commission's deputy chairman for law enforcement, Bibid Samad Rianto, said the suspect, only identified by his initials, JES, was a head member of the city law bureau.

"As of this week, we have stepped up the status of the investigation," Bibid said.

JES, he said, had allegedly charged an illegal fee of 10 percent in a project that was included in the 2006/2007 city budget.

Bibid added that his commission had questioned several witnesses in the case, which had reportedly caused the state Rp 3.9 billion in losses.

The suspect would be charged for violating articles 2 and 3 of the Corruption Law, Bibid said.

The KPK has yet to name any other suspects in the case.
